Definitions of the main business SMS terms.
- 2-Way SMS
- A service combining outbound SMS (MT) and inbound SMS (MO): the recipient can reply to the message, using a short code or a long number.
- A2P (Application-to-Person)
- Messages sent from an application or platform to a mobile user (alerts, OTP codes, notifications).
- Delivery report (DLR)
- Status information returned for a sent message (for example: delivered or failed).
- MO SMS (Mobile Originated)
- An SMS sent from a user's phone to a service or an application.
- MSISDN
- A mobile phone number in international format, including the country code.
- MT SMS (Mobile Terminated)
- An SMS sent from an application or platform and delivered to a user's phone.
- OTP (one-time password)
- A single-use code sent by SMS to authenticate a user or validate an operation.
- Sender ID
- The name or number displayed as the sender on the recipient's phone.
- SMPP (Short Message Peer-to-Peer)
- A standard protocol used by operators and platforms to exchange SMS between applications and short message service centres (SMSC).
- SMS Gateway
- An entry and exit point for SMS between an application and operator networks.
